He attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in literature, philosophy, religion, and psychology and a minor in German, including a summer studying abroad at the University of Wurzburg. He published his first short story at the age 18 after two years of “No thanks. While living in New England and abroad, Professor Burack taught courses in developmental writing, freshman and advanced composition, creative writing, literature and poetry, French, and various humanities and social science courses at public and private institutions. He credits his successful professional academic career to being able to teach, present, and work alongside his wife, and colleague, Professor Keziah Tinkle-Williams. Professor Donna Thompson grew up in the Industrial North and attended public schools in Flint, Michigan, where she was a member of the physics club, the math team, and the tuba section of the marching band in high school.
Any creative writing courses taken at certificate-offering campuses are transferable toward the certificate. She earned a self-designed Bachelor of Arts, combining sociology, politics, and women’s studies, with a double minor in French and English from Manhattanville College in New York. Only six of the required 24 certificate credits must be earned at the individual college in which students enroll, offering writers tremendous flexibility in course scheduling and convenience.

A devoted Beatles fan, she’s led Beatles tours for American tourists in London and appeared on a special Beatles Tours episode for Australia’s Channel 9. Chardon taught composition, linguistics, and bilingual education courses at Arizona State University for nine years.

Malik Toms was born and raised in Harlem, New York, and is a year veteran of the pen and keyboard. SinceProfessor Burack has been a resident in the Phoenix-metro area. Professor Wendy Matar is a sixth generation Arizonan with a western ranching background on both sides of her family. He has also served as the creative non-fiction editor at Front Porch Journal and as an assistant editor at American Short Fiction. As a writing teacher, and the editor of several award-winning poetry and fiction volumes, Professor Burack is fully invested in encouraging and supporting student creative and academic writers to respect their own voices and the writing arts they seek to pursue.
What she enjoys most about teaching is working with students and opening their minds to new possibilities, capitalizing on the opportunities to not only educate students about writing genres but to also slowly erode away the mental constructs of cultural ignorance.
She has facilitated numerous professional development workshops for middle school, high school, and college faculty from a wide array of disciplines, including such diverse areas as English, aviation, sociology, math, history, fine arts, physics, and biology.
Professor Thompson is the author of a variety of publications ranging from scholarly articles in gender studies to creative non-fiction.

Completion of the certificate does not lead to a particular degree program, but may aid students in their pursuit of a career in the writing writlng and in their continued enjoyment of writing for personal growth. Many of the courses include service learning and learning community experiences.
The program serves many students, especially women, minorities, seniors, and working adults, who are under-represented in traditional creative writing programs because of cultural, dialect or language differences, scheduling difficulties, financial need, or lack of academic experience.
