It is funny how for at least some of us myself at once an instance and a recovering, I hope, instance of this it can truly feel like that to-do list consumes your life. It is remarkable how many people were touched by Sam and how many people called him a friend. For his wife and children it is surely so incomparably greater that I lack words. Still, I might as well say it again: Sam’s enthusiasm and creativity played an important role in making the Gatsby Unit one of the top labs in computational neuroscience.
Sam was an awesome researcher, speaker and colleague. I am just a student of Machine Learning from Indonesia. And yet your life is full of joyful times, too. For his wife and children it is surely so incomparably greater that I lack words. Sam had a singular gift:
You and your family are in my heart and prayers. I saw the new of his death on one of the comments on his lectures. Here Xam discovered what would become his lifelong interest: As someone who is intimately familiar with this field, working in it myself, I understand both the joys and intense pressures that come with being in academia. He was always a good person to have in the group meetings, both because of his general optimistic influence and because of his sharp insights.
He was a shining star and I wanted to claim to be a mentor but in truth I learned more from him than he did from me, and we were colleagues, almost brothers, curious to figure things out and share them with others.
His energy and his glow as Zoubin rightly put italong with his humor was incredibly infectious and it really doweis all boundaries.
I had the privilege of taking two courses with him, and even now find myself occasionally referring to his course notes. He realized that non-linear dynamical systems could be learned using the Expectation-Maximization EM algorithm.

This is shocking news to me. While at MIT and upon his return to Toronto, he focused on using machine learning and statistical methods to contribute to other sciences, such as astronomy and biology. SNE has become a popular method for visualizing and organizing high-dimensional data, while NCA has spurred a resurgence of interest in methods that learn similarity metrics from data. Sam was not just a scientist, however, he was also an engineer.
Roweis, on January 12, He was fond of saying that Google’s search engine is one of the closest things we have to an intelligent computer.
Sam Roweis, Associate Professor
Already in his short time at NYU, Sam had become a key member of the computer science department, thanks to his broad interests, his clear-sightedness, his sense of humor, his warmth and his infectious enthusiasm. Let me add my sorrow and condolences. He started an extremely fruitful collaboration with NYU astronomer and secondary-school friend David W. His death is being called a suicide which is so incompatible with my understanding of Sam that it strains my credibility.
He had a very deep understanding of people and was keenly aware of being helpful, including everyone and making everything fun. I will never forget him.
Data driven production models for speech processing
With his contemporary Erik Winfree and others, he made a proposal for a sticker-based model of computation. It is funny how for at least some of us myself at once an instance and a recovering, I hope, instance of this it can truly feel like that to-do list consumes your life. I still dam his linear algebra and Gaussian distribution notes as references in my classes.
Their most visible success saj was a kind of search engine for the sky, called Astrometry. Sam Roweis’s home page and publications. They were born very prematurely and thesiw to be kept in intensive care unit for many weeks. Sam was a wonderful teacher, with a great ability to combine the practical, the theoretical, the serious, the funny, the ability to think around problems, and the ability to go straight through them.

Sam was my youngest cousin. Citation Roweis, Sam T. Sam took an extended paternity leave from Google to take care of the twins. Thank you for the site, and thank you for your thoughtful remarks about Sam Roweis. There was such tremendous goodness in him.
Sam Roweis, NYU
His talks and discussions were clear and highly entertaining. Let us resolve to reach out and help others in distress, whenever possible. A course on homotopy type theory.
